Find the best Blunsdon walks. The Ramblers Association now have a greatly improved website which is an exceptional resource for all walkers, hikers and young families wanting to go for walks with young children. This site lists everything from historical walks to leader led walks to any really arduous walks within the Shrivenham area.

Find A Walk Near Me by using Walking Britain is a truly excellent and free resource. Just enter where you are or where you would like to walk - and print out directions. The walks are graded and you can buy a specific map of the area at the same time. These are proper OS maps and weather proofed if required.

I always think of walking as one of the few activities you can do for free - and now you can with this guide!

Walking, Hiking and Outdoor Shops

Swindon, a Wyevale Garden Centre

Hyde Road, Stratton St Margaret, Swindon SN2 7SE, UK – 0844 288 5112

We enjoy the food at Wyevale, however, I feel REALLY bad for the servers. How they are able to give service with a smile is beyond me. I'm completely surprised they don't pass out from heat exhaustion. These poor people are working in "Sweatshop" like conditions. Now that Summer is here it is absolutely stifling in the restaurant. We are regretting choosing Wyevale today. Unfortunately we didn't realize quite how hot it was before we ordered. As we have sat here eating it's grown worse. It's so hot we all feel a bit sick form eating our meal. WYEVALE MANAGEMENT do something to cool down your restaurant and take better care of your poor employees!!!!!!!!!!

Have visited several Wyevale garden centres and this is by far the best. We recently purchased some Rolawn turf and found the staff especially a lady called Val extremely helpful. Nothing was to much trouble, she promised to call me when your delivery arrived and she did actually call! This will certainly be our first choice for all our future gardening needs. (A young man at Wroughton Hay Lane branch gave us totally inaccurate information over the phone, and was keen to get us off of the phone asap)

WalkingWorld.jpg
Another good walking guide. Walkingworld has huge library of guides with a good selection of walks, of varying lengths and grades, pretty well anywhere in the UK. The walks come in an excellent format making them very easy to follow, with photographs to illustrate every important decision point and a proper Ordnance Survey map.

A modist annual subscription gives you unlimited access to all the walks. However you can Pay As Go by downloading indiviual walks. You get one walk free.

Crucially you can also find walks France, Spain, Norway, Portugal and Australia!

Snake bites

Most snake bites in the UK are not serious. But it's important to get all snake bites checked as soon as possible.

Call 999 or go to A&E immediately if:

  • you think you, or someone else, has been bitten by a snake

Find your nearest A&E

Information:

If you're not in the UK when you are bitten by a snake, contact the emergency medical services in the country you're in.

Get foreign travel advice on GOV.UK

What to do while you're waiting for help

Do

  • stay calm, most snake bites in the UK are not serious and can be treated

  • keep the part of your body that was bitten as still as you can

  • lie in the recovery position if you can

  • take paracetamol for any pain

  • try to remember the colour and pattern of the snake to tell the doctor

  • take off any jewellery and loosen clothes near the bite, in case it swells

Don’t

  • do not go near the snake, or try to catch or kill it

  • do not try to suck or cut the poison (venom) out of the bite

  • do not tie anything tightly round the part of the body where the bite is

  • do not take aspirin or ibuprofen, as they can make bleeding worse

What happens at the hospital

You will usually need to stay in hospital for at least 24 hours if you have been bitten by a snake.

The bite will be cleaned and bandaged. You may be given an injection to help protect you from tetanus.

If you were bitten by a poisonous (venomous) snake you will be treated with a medicine to fight the venom. This is given through a thin tube into a vein, called a drip.

Types of UK snake

Only 3 types of snake are found in the wild in the UK.

The adder is the only venomous snake, but you should get all snake bites checked as soon as possible.

Telling the doctors the colour and pattern of the snake that bit you could help them treat it.
